words of the day

I miss being able to read books over the weekend, or for fun. That pesky booklist.

So I subscribed for this little ‘Word of the Day’ thing, and get a new word sent to me each day. Here’s the list (because you all know how much I love lists) from Aug 8th to Aug 18th 2006.

ascribe: to attribute
compunction: anxiety or unease from guilt; also, a scruple
animus: a feeling of ill will; also, animating spirit; disposition
piebald: mottled; also, mixed
eremite: a hermit
corroborate: to strengthen or make more certain with other evidence
fatuous: inanely foolish; stupid; also, illusory
arrogate: to claim or seize without right or justification
chary: wary; cautious
fortuitous: happening by chance
adumbrate: to outline; also, to foreshadow; also, to suggest; also, to shade

I like ‘chary’ but when on earth will one ever get the opportunity to use that one? It reminds me of ‘charivari’ (a noisy serenade, or consort - as in musical one). Hmm. I am a chary eremite. It just sounds like someone is trying to speak middle English.
