I wish I had’ve taken a photo for the benefit of my makeup-loving friends as I wore some very vibrant colours on Sunday evening - our family went out to celebrate my brother’s 25th birthday. Very early that day, my father had remarked that his ‘pickneys’ (West Indian talk for ‘child’, or in this case, ‘children’) were now fully grown.
Skilfully avoiding a panic attack upon approval of my outfit, I put on a very deep red lipstick by MAC called Rockocco. It sort of sounds naughty, doesn’t it? I used MAC’s matching lip liner in Cherry, which is a typical red. Though my brows were a bit messy, I lined my eyes with NARS’ Thunderball eyeshadow - this is one of my favourite makeup items ever. Lovely, smoky Russian cat slate blue. You can actually see I’ve got brown eyes when I wear this. Lastly, NARS’ blush in Exhibit A, a matte tomato-red that could have you looking ridiculous if you’re not careful.
For fragrance, I chose Urban Decay’s fragrance oil in ‘Sin’ - a delicious foodie, vanilla-musk type. Oriental woody, it might be classified as? I’m sure it doesn’t do anything to make me look sexy, but it’s hard not to feel slightly sexy when wearing it.
Before all this, I’d showered and done my best to smell faintly floral, and was more than a tad indulgent. I used Cherriflip’s shower snacks in Sunset Glow - this cream has a butter-like consistency and gently lathers and exfoliates the skin without irritating it. And oh, the scent! Delightful. After that, I used my Magnolia acacia shower gel from the same company - not completely floral but has a hint of tart fruitiness about it. I’m surprised that I rather like it. To continue that scent theme, I finished off by applying Fyrinnae’s rich body cream in Orchid Mist, yet another fruity floral. My skin has been so dry of late: I confess I’ve been neglectful of it…
The journey my senses were made to go on didn’t quite finish there. A tablet of diazepam I’d taken to combat my panic attack hit just after the arrival of my champagne cocktail - it was like being drunk minus alcohol consumption! Had things become any more hazy, it would have been…sinister. The cocktail was nice - a little sweeter than I’m used to, with the addition of brandy. I would have preferred my sugar cube to be truly doused in Angostura bitters.
After that, I tried a Churchill martini - which was supposed to be dry but seemed rather too sweet for my liking. Named after Winston Churchill. He strikes me as a man who would drink nastily bitter martinis!
The food was altogether a more satisfying affair - linguini with slivered almonds and prosciutto! Half a dozen oysters with lemon and lime juice - the best way to have them. Then for dessert, chocolate mud cake which was not too rich. It’s been a very long time since I enjoyed what I ate.
Last but not least, as I retired to bed, I sprayed myself with Little Shop of Beauty’s pin-up spray in Sleeping Beauty, which really does soothe, such a gentle, comforting scent. My feet were so cold that sleep did not come easily, alas so I massaged my feet and hands with a sample from Cherriflip - their ’soft stuff’ (body lotion) in Sugarberry Ice which was pretty yummy-smelling! Again, tart and not too sickly sweet in its foodiness. I hope it softened my hideously dry feet which are usually baby-soft - not by my judgement.
After such a weekend, what to use tonight I wonder?
